Assessment Tools – Explanation
The use of comprehensive Big6 assessment tools allows student progress to be considered at each step of the Big6 process. By assessing students’ skills with each step of the information problem-solving process or a particular step of focus, teachers will be better able to modify large- and small-group instruction to improve students' use of the process over time.
Following multiple instructional and practice opportunities, the evaluation of students’ use of the Big6 process is also best done with regard for all steps of the process.
In this way, students that might be less skillful presenters, but competent information gatherers and note-takers for example, are evaluated on the total process and not unduly penalized in skill areas still under development. Teachers may weight certain steps more heavily based on their instructional emphases over time.
